Certificate in Economics

The School of Economics offers a certificate in Economics for students in all disciplines at Georgia Tech. The certificate program provides a general acquaintance with economic thought and is especially valuable for students considering graduate work in law or business administration. It should also be attractive to engineering and science students who wish to broaden their education and to understand the forces that shape the modern world.

The Requirements

The certificate requires a minimum of 12 semester hours in Economics, at least 9 hours being at the 3000 level or higher. Courses must be taken for a letter grade, with an earned average grade of C or better. Courses required by course name and number in a student’s major may not be credited by that student toward the certificate.

2000 level courses that may be considered for certificate credit are:

  • ECON 2100 Economic Analysis and Policy Problems
  • ECON 2106 Principles of Microeconomics
  • ECON 2105 Principles of Macroeconomics

Courses that are required for the student’s primary degree may not be included in certificate hours.

At least 9 hours must be chosen from the following 3000/4000-level courses:

The Process

Contact , program coordinator for the School of Economics, to plan a program of study and confirm the opportunities available to certificate students. Early in the semester in which you graduate, you should complete the application form and submit it to the School of Economics office, Room 203, Habersham Building (located at 781 Marietta Street). A certificate will be issued when you complete your undergraduate degree requirements.

Omicron Delta Episilon

Membership in ODE, the national honor society in economics, is limited to students with an overall GPA of 3.0, with a B average in at least 10 semester hours of economics, and with high ethical standards. If you qualify and wish to join, your application for admission should be filed immediately upon completion of 10 semester hours. See Dr. William Schaffer (Room 215, Habersham Building) for details.
