Minor in Economics

The School of Economics offers a minor in economics for students in all disciplines at Georgia Tech. The minor program provides a general acquaintance with economic thought and is especially valuable for students considering graduate work in law or business administration. It should also be attractive to students who wish to broaden their education and to understand the forces that shape the modern world.

Requirements for the Minor

The minor requires a minimum of 18 semester hours in Economics of which 12 semester hours are advanced upper level courses (numbered 3000 or above). All courses counting toward the minor must be taken on a letter-grade basis and must be completed with an overall grade point average of at least 2.0.

Some Limitations

Courses used in a minor may NOT be used to fulfill Areas A-E requirements (humanities electives, social science electives, etc.). Courses required by name and number in a student’s major degree program may not be used toward the minor. No more than 4 semester hours of Special Topics courses may be included in a minor program. Special problem courses may not be included. A student may have no more than two minors.

The Procedure

A student may select a minor in Economics in consultation with the advisor in the major field. The student should then contact one of the following advisors in the School of Economics: undergraduate director, , or program coordinator,

Together, student and advisor should verify the student’s course of study for the minor. When the student petitions for a degree, he/she should complete a petition for a minor and have it approved by the School of Economics. The petition for a minor should accompany the petition for the major degree when reviewed and approved by the major school. Then both forms should be submitted to the registrar.

The minor will be conferred at the same time the degree is conferred, and the degree and minor will be recorded on the student’s transcript. The minor will not be on the diploma.
