School of Economics

M.S. Degree Requirements

The Master of Science degree requires a minimum of 33 semester credit hours of coursework with:

  1. at least 12 hours of economic theory and applied economics;
  2. at least one additional quantitative methods course beyond econometrics; and
  3. a master’s thesis or, for a non-thesis option, one additional course offered in the School of Economics.

Prerequisites

It is expected that entering students will have taken courses in the principles of microeconomics and principles of macroeconomics. Entering students must also have completed a year of calculus.

Core Courses

  • Econ 6105 – Macroeconomics
  • Econ 6106 – Microeconomics
  • Econ 6120 – Research Methods
  • Econ 6140 – Probability/Statistical Methods
  • Econ 6160 – Econometric Analysis

Specialty Area Courses

In addition to the core courses, students are required to satisfy two concentration areas. Each specialty area consists of two courses, one of which must be taken in the School of Economics. The second course can be taken in one of several other units at Georgia Tech. By allowing students to satisfy specialty areas with economics as well as non-economics courses, students have the ability to tailor specializations to their particular interests. Among the areas of specialization are industrial organization, international economics, economics of technology and innovation, and economic development.

Quantitative Methods Courses

A unique feature of the master’s program is its emphasis upon quantitative methods and econometric analysis. Developments in statistical techniques and information technology require students to have a broad set of skills to be competitive in today’s business environment. In addition to a course in probability/statistical methods and regression analysis, students are required to take at least one additional quantitative methods course (e.g., discrete choice econometrics, forecasting, experimental design).
