Frequently Asked Questions

There are sometimes changes to the School of Economics class schedule after the OSCAR is posted. Please read the frequently asked questions below before contacting the School.

Can I get an overload?

We will not begin issuing overloads until Phase II registration begins. Overloads will be processed each Wednesday of Phase II registration. You cannot request an overload from the professor teaching the course. The OSCAR Web Site is the ONLY way to request an overload.

Will I get the overload?

The majority of students that request overloads get them, but not everyone will. Requests are granted in the following order of preference: graduating seniors, Econ majors, Econ minors, Econ certificate students, seniors, juniors, sophomores. Freshmen are rarely, if ever, granted overloads.

I need a prerequisite override. What should I do?

Please email your advisor, Dr. Derek Tittle, to request a prerequisite override.

Why is the instructor for my Econ course listed as “Staff”?

We have recently hired some new faculty who will be starting this fall. As soon as they are in the system we will update the OSCAR. We will post details about the new hires here soon.

The catalog lists Econ 2100 as a prerequisite for the course I want to take. I have taken Econ 2101. Can Econ 2101 be used as a substitute to satisfy an Econ 2100 prerequisite?

Yes, but you will need a prerequisite override under the current catalog. Please email Dr. Tittle.

I have taken Econ 2100. Can I also take Econ 2101?

No. You can NOT receive credit for both 2100 and 2101.

I have taken Econ 2106 and/or Econ 2105. If I also take Econ 2101, will that count towards fulfilling my Economics degree requirements?

No. Econ 2101 is for students who are not Economics majors.

I have taken economics in high school. Can I take the Advance Standing exam for Econ 2100 or Econ 2101 or Econ 2105 or Econ 2106?

No. High school economics is not sufficient for an Advance Standing Exam. Please note that if you have passed the AP exam or the Baccalaureate HL exam in Economics, your credentials have already been evaluated by Georgia Tech for transfer of credit at the time of admission.

I have taken Econ 2100 or Econ 2101 as a non-economics major. I am now an Econ major/would like to be an Econ major. Can I use Econ 2100 or Econ 2101 towards my Economics degree?

Please contact Dr. Tittle to discuss your options.

I understand that the School of Economics is offering undergraduate students the Research Option. Where can I find more information about this?

Please visit the UROP website for general information about the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program. You may also contact Professor Usha Nair-Reichert for an appointment to discuss the Research Option in the School of Economics. If you know the topic you are interested in writing your senior paper on, or the area you are interested in, please contact faculty members working in that field. You can begin by looking at the research interests of faculty members in the School. If you need help with a research topic, please contact Professor Usha Nair-Reichert. If you are unable to find a faculty member to work with, please email Dr. Derek Tittle for assistance.

What is PURA? How can I apply for it?

PURA stands for the President's Undergraduate Research Awards. Please visit the PURA website for more details about this program and the application process. The PURA application deadlines are announced each semester. Please contact the professor you are interested in working with directly to discuss your potential research project.

Are there opportunities at Georgia Tech for undergraduate students to publish their research?

Georgia Tech has recently started a refereed undergraduate research journal, The Tower. You can submit your research paper to The Tower.

I am going to study at a foreign university. What is the procedure to find out if the credit for courses I take abroad can be transferred?

You should first refer to the Transfer Equivalencies Table that can be accessed from Oscar to see if your course is listed there as being approved for transfer of credit. If it is approved in the Transfer Equivalencies Table, then please contact Dr. Tittle after you take the class with documentation regarding the grade you earned in the class to complete the transfer of credit. If it is not an approved course, please email Professor Nair-Reichert a detailed syllabus for the course. A course catalog description is insufficient to evaluate whether credit for a course taken abroad can be transferred. You will be informed by email whether the transfer of credit is approved or not. Once you receive the approval, please contact Dr. Tittle to complete the documentation and paperwork required for the transfer of credit.

I am doing a paid internship. What should I do to have that included on my transcript?

If you have further questions, please contact Professor Usha Nair-Reichert, Director of Undergraduate Programs, Dr. Derek Tittle, or Kari McCarley, Communications Coordinator.
