Dr. Boston is a professor of Economics. A native of Jacksonville, Florida, he received the Ph.D. Degree in Economics from Cornell University. His appointment began at Georgia Tech in 1985. He is a national and international consultant on the economic status of minority communities and small and minority businesses and specializes in research on entrepreneurship and community development. Formerly he served as president of the National Economic Association, editor of The Review of Black Political Economy and Senior Economist to the Joint Economic Committee of Congress. An academic and entrepreneur, from 1994 to 2007 he was the President of Boston Research Group, Inc and in 2007 launched a new enterprise; EuQuant.

He currently serves as a member of the Black Enterprise Board of Economists and a member of Mayor Shirley Franklin's Council of Economic Advisors, Vice President of the Board of Governors of West Virginia State University and Secretary to the Georgia Tech Athletic Board. He is currently assisting the National Assembly of Nigeria in the establishment of a National Budgeting and Research Office and he formerly worked with UNESCO Brazil to development policies aimed at enhancing racial equality in education and business. Dr Boston is also working with the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation and US Congressional Small Business Committees to revise federal regulations regarding Small Disadvantaged Businesses (see, Increasing the Capacity of the Nation's Small Disadvantaged Businesses, 2007 a report to CBCF). His most recent scholarly articles include, "The Effects of Revitalization on Public Housing Residents" Autumn 2005 issue of the Journal of the American Planning Association; The Role of Black-owned Businesses in Black Community Development, ed., Paul Ong, (2006) Jobs and Economic Development in Minority Communities; and "Secrets of Gazelles: Differences Between African American High-Growth Oriented Entrepreneurs and Other Small Business Owners vol 613 The Annals of the American Association of Social and Political Science (September 2007). Dr Boston is currently completing a book manuscript that is funded by a grant from the Kauffman Foundation and is the current recipient of major research grants from the MacArthur Foundation, US Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Kauffman Foundation..

Dr. Boston created the Gazelle Index, in partnership with ING Financial Services, and he holds several Trademarks and Servicemarks. He is the author or editor of six books, including Leading Issues in Black Political Economy (2002), Affirmative Action and Black Entrepreneurship (1999), and The Inner City: Urban Poverty and Economic Development in the Next Century (1997) with C. Ross.
