• Boston Proposes National Commission on Black Employment during White House Policy Meeting

    Robust economic recovery and job training programs won’t solve the employment problems of African Americans said School of Economics Professor Thomas “Danny” Boston during a meeting held by President Obama’s Council of Economic Advisers at a White House meeting April 11. Boston recommended that, to truly resolve the issues, the White House establish a National Commission on Black Employment.

    The world health situation is both dire and correctable said William H. Foege during a speech March 15 as Georgia Tech and its Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts presented him with the Ivan Allen Jr. Prize for Social Courage.  Foege pointed to poverty as the underlying problem and enlarged on that theme saying, “People who are poor are subsidizing our way of life and we need to have the courage to change that.”

  • IAC Students Part of Tech Team Awarded $40,000 For Chilean Disaster Response Venture

    In a post-disaster environment, getting potable water to areas cut off by destroyed roads and infrastructure can be both time-consuming and ultimately fatal for many. A team of Tech students and alumni has developed a system to address those logistical issues in the wake of disaster, and earned $40,000 from Startup Chile to further develop its idea.

    Travis Horsley, a Public Policy graduate student and Bachelor of Science alumnus, and Melissa McCoy, a double-major in Economics and Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, are two members of this team.

    Georgia Tech's Enterprise Innovation Institute (EI2) has named School of Economics alumnus Alfie Meek as director of Community Innovation Services (CIS).

    Meek was previously employed as the Director of the Economic Analysis Division with the Gwinnett County Department of Financial Services, where he oversaw the county's economic development program and was responsible for its forecasting and research efforts.

    This academic year closes with transitions in leadership for four of the College’s six schools. 

    Ronald H. Bayor, William J. Long, and Patrick S. McCarthy end terms serving as chairs of the schools of History, Technology, and Society; International Affairs; and Economics, respectively. Bill Long will assume the post of Dean of the Georgia State University College of Arts and Sciences. Ron Bayor and Pat McCarthy will transition to full-time faculty status.

    September 16, the U.S. Senate confirmed Marilyn A. Brown to the Tennessee Valley Authority Board of Directors.  Brown, a professor of energy policy in the Georgia Tech Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts School of Public Policy, was nominated December 10, 2009, by President  Obama for a term expiring May 18, 2012.  She succeeds Susan Richardson Williams, whose term expired.

    "550,000 people came back into the labor market [in August]...and so that's why we have that tick [slight increase in overall unemployment rate]. And that's a good outcome," said Economics Professor Thomas Danny Boston to Tony Harris on CNN Newsroom. Boston continued, "when you drop out of the labor force, if you have not looked for a job within four weeks, you're not counted in the unemployment numbers. So when people come back into the labor market, even though they're searching for a job, now they're counted. And that often tends to push that unemployment rate up a bit.
